Three More Days, AARRHH!!

OMG!!! Three more days until Christmas and I JUST STARTED shopping today. I am soo worried that I wont get everyone in my family a present. I mean two days for five people. Are you serious?? Im kind of lucky though because the person I really wanted to get a present for was my mum.

I was thinking of what I could get her. It was hard and I was running out of time so I thought, "Summer, shoes, JANDALS!!" Jandals it was, so off to Sylvia park my dad and I went. Getting the jandals was easy, it was trying to rap them up with out her noticing was the hard part.

We got home and she had gone somewhere. I knew this was the only time I had to rap it up and put it under the tree so I did. I did a rushed job though because I kept thinking she would pull up and snap me. I did it, it was all rapped up and covered. But there was something missing. I looked at the other presents under the tree and couldn't find what it was.

Then she walked in and in her hand was the mail. "Card!", I said to myself. I ran to my room and quickly wrote a Merry Christmas on a paper and folded it up. I was just about to stick it on when I realise she was right behind me. Slowly turning around, I say to her, "Mum can you hear that I think its coming from the bathroom??" She turned around and walked off. Slamming the present, I put the card on it. "fewhh, one down, four to go."

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela born as Rolihlahla Mandela in 1918 has sadly ended his life at the age of 95. The name Nelson came from his primary teacher at a school in Qunu. After going to primary, he was sent or entrusted to Thembu Regent Jongintaba Dalindyebo. After one year at University College at Fort Hare in Alice, he was expelled.

He was expelled because apparently, he played a role in a student strike. In 1942 Mandela joined the African Congress and was South Africa’s main campaigner for black equality.

Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1956 along with 155 others in trial for treason. Sentenced to 5 years in prison, he was sent to Robben Island for leaving the country without a passport.

In 1963, Nelson Mandela along with the other leaders of the ANC were put on trial for being involved in planning an armed action and conspiracy to try and help other countries take over Africa. He was found guilty sentenced to life time in prison. Luckily for him, he was released after 18 years.

Hours after his release, he promised to end Apartheid once and for all. IN front of heaps of people. On April 27, 1994, he was elected as South Africa's first democratically president.

In his later years of life, he was in and out of hospital many times and sadly most of his children died. This wonderful man recently passed away December 6th 2013.

Despite him being expelled and arrested, he was a man never to be forgotten. His message has left a mark on everyone today. As Nelson Mandela said, “The true character of a society is revealed in how it treats its children."

Action World

Action world filled with amazing obstacles and based in Henderson, is where the yr 7s and I went to for our big day out. Traveling on a bus to the destination was giving me butterflies in my stomach. I just couldn’t stop thinking of the trapeze and high-wire.

The bus pulls up and off the bus we get. Looking at the Action World, all my butterflies flew away because it was way smaller than I thought it would be. Greeting us there was a man called Jerry. He gave us instructions as soon as we sat down. He also introduced us to the other staff there.

Split into four groups, we were assigned to a different obstacles. Out of four of the obstacles we tried my favourite was the trapeze. It made me feel like I was Tarzan which is my nickname. I thought that was pretty cool.

It had been about an hour and it was free time. Straight away, Jorja and I raced to the jousting bridge to verse each other. In my head I was saying, “Its inevitable shes gonna win because of her size.” ….. Walking up the sides of the bridge, I was planning to tackle her down. But then meeting her in the middle of the bridge, I was hoping she wouldn’t hurt me.

We were trying to force each other off using our arms. Pushing and grabbing, we were trying soo hard to make each other fall. Because of my amazingness, I triped her up and made her fall. She tried pulling me down with her. But once again my strong as mucles and calf muscles

Unusually, I defeated the giant and held my victory with pride. Jumping off the bridge, I struggled to get out of the soft padding. That kind of took my pride , but nevermind.  Unfortunately, free time wasn’t as long as I thought it would be. After going on the humongous trapeze, the big day out had finished and back to east was where we were going.

Action world was such an amazing place to go and I would love to go back there again.

Netbook Reflection

Over the past 3 years, I have been learning with a netbook. It has made learning easier and more fun. Using my netbook means I have access to any information I want. Like this year, I learnt the real origins of halloween. All from the internet.

The amount of differences between pencil and paper and a netbook is humongous. When I write a story on pencil and paper, my hands get sweaty and sore and I get annoyed. But now my fingers are free and don’t get sweaty. They feel like they can do anything in the world like superman.

The internet has so much information. I can use whatever and whenever I want. As long as its labeled for reuse. Having access to the internet for the information I need has made me the quite intelligent kid I am today. I hope that the technology in schools will increase and hopefully help kids learning like it helped me.

Amazing Things About Static Images

This is a static image. Static Image means that any image that is static is still. They also mean a lot too. Its not just a picture, its a picture with meaning and purpose.

This static image is about a person dancing in a car park at the time of dusk. The photo makes me feel like the dancer is passionate about dancing. What makes this picture unique is how it was taken. It was taken to show the silhouette of the dancer. The positioning of the dancer is amazing too. I think the message of this image is to show people who love dancing can do it anywhere at any time.

Maths Question Number 6

Kaycee and Tylas Maths from Team 5 PES on Vimeo.

This is once again another maths activity assigned to Kaycee and I.

Aspirational Talk

It was Thursday morning and the intermediate classes were getting the opportunity to listen to Future Aspirational talkers. We got to hear from Tristan Pang, Aysha Hohaia, Caine Warren, Emma Brown and Mosa Mafileo. The person who inspired me the most was Mosa Mafileo.

Mosa talked about his life as a kid all the way up to where he is now. His life growing up was pretty hard as he had to live in a 2 bedroom house with 15 people. He didn’t go to the best providing schools. He said that our school is lucky because when he went to intermediate, his ICT suite was pretty rubbish. The problem was that the computers in the suite were constantly broken.

While he was in school, he said he didn’t get to see his parents. His parents were constantly working. He blamed it on politics so he dreamed of becoming a politician and make life easier for Polynesian and Maoris. Luckily for him he finished school and became a politician. He quoted "Chase your dream and catch it", was Mosa's motto.

My aspirational goal in life is to become a pro dancer and dance at the Royal Palace with Paris Goebel. I would also like to compete in the HHI World Competitions. This has been my dream since I started school.

Halloween - EXT

This is a list of things I witness that are associated with Halloween.

Pumpkin
Lollies
Skeletons
Costumes
Cobwebs
Evil characters
Pretending
Tricking and treating

This is a picture of the pictionary game we played describing some words from the origin of Halloween.

I think halloween is about celebrating the creation of evil characters and pretending to be like them. I also think its about going around your neighbourhood and saying trick or treat to get heaps of lollies and food. I am going to determine what Halloween is really about.

The origin of trick or treating started by going around asking for soul cakes. After receiving cakes people would go and pray for the souls in purgatory in return of the soul cakes. Purgatory comes from a catholic term. It is a place between heaven and hell. The prays would wish to send the souls out of purgatory to heaven.

People also use to pour roman milk on the catholic graves to stop them from rising and roaming. Roman milk would block the way through permeable. This would happen on May 13. It is called Lemuria.

May 13th was christianised and changed from Lemuria to All Saints Day. The christianised way was such a success they decided to move it to November 1st. The day before the 1st was Samhain. All Saints day was moved to the first to suck the life out of the Samhain Festival because the catholics thought the Samhain's were pagon. Now it was November 1st known as All Saints Day. This again got changed to All Hallows Day. Samhain was the day before All Hallows day. So as the evening before All Hallows day, Samhain was changed to All Hallows Evening. Once again The name of All Hallows evening was shortened to All hallows Even then to Halloween.

Jack-o-laterns. Where did they come from?? Jack is a guy who was sent to hell. In hell he was soo bad not even the devil wanted him, so the devil sent Jack out of hell with a flicker of light in a lantern. Once when the devil went to see Jack, Jack played a trick on the devil and nailed him to a wall. The devil begged for release. Jack said "only if you let me live as long as like on earth." Stupidly, the devil accepted the bet. Now people say if you see a flickering light over a swampy area dont go to it because it is Jack.

This is only one of original stories of Halloween.

The Different Celebrations of Halloween

Halloween is a day people all over the world celebrate. It is now celebrated by dressing up in costume and walking around the neighbourhood saying trick or treat, hoping for a reply of lollies. The original way of celebrating Halloween was by wearing costumes and walking around a bonfire. This was meant to ward off ghosts and spirits.

There are 2 ways of celebrating Halloween. It really depended what country you were in.

Romans and druids believed that the god, Samhain, summoned wicked witches and souls and condemned them into animals. People though that the animals, would harm then so they sacrificed something to the god, so they would not be harmed. They day of the sacrifice was October 31st.

The second way of celebrating was in England and spread throughout America and Austria. Halloween first started in the eighth century. Pope Gregory III, designated November the 1st for the day to acknowledge all saints and martyrs. It was called all saints day.

Through out the years, English changed and the name All Saints Day was converted to All Hallows Eve and later on, changed to Halloween. The date was also moved to October 31st.

My Highlight of te wiki

I had been waiting for days and it had finally started. Kapa Haka after school. I love kapa haka which is why I couldn't wait for it to start.

It was Friday after school and kapaz had started. Before we started we kicked the after noon off with a karakia and himene like you normally would do before starting anything in maori. "amene", singing with the strums of Miss T's guitar.

Miss T and my mum were the first people to start this kapa haka off. They wanted to start this because they thought it would be tino!! So with the help from Mr G, they started a kapa haka group up.

When Mr G arrived, I was so excited. He taught us a waiata he had created previously while drinking his coffee he said. He taught it to us and in about half an hour we had the kupu and tune. Now all we had to do was memorize it. So we did and this is what it sounds like. Introducing te waiata Hoea Ra.

Hewa was the first real book he wrote and illustrated all by himself. That book won him the 2010 LIANZA Kura Pounamu award. This man has won so many awards, theres too many to count.

Little Red Riding Hood: The real Story

Reporters state girl with Golden Locks named Paris being chased out of the woods by three lions. She stole a plate of pork ribs. Her story was that it was not her fault. She had been living on a mountain for about three years with only what nature had provided.

Reporter: Why were you living on a mountain? Paris: At the age of twelve I was kicked out of my own kingdom for the Golden locks I was born with. It was not my fault everybody else was brunet. I was forced to live on the furtherest mountain from the kingdom. Just for being odd. Reporter: quite a story you have here. Its really interesting. You shall tell it to the judge Goldilocks. Paris: Hey I recognize you. Your from the kingdom aren't you. Wait are you my brother? Reporter: I chime in with haven't you people ever heard of closing the goshdamn door no its much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality.

I was sent to court as reporters did not believe my story. I was sentenced to live in a dark gloomy underground lair for a 12months period. During my underground lair time I met a boy who was also persuaded by the sweet smell of food on another mountain. His story was quite similar to mine. I looked up to him as a brother. And little did I know he WAS my brother. The long lost one I had heard about while I lived in the Kingdom.

To show we were the men, we were going to create a diversion at the kingdom so our animals could bust it down. P.S eat everyone as well.

Writing with Miss Squires

Strenuously climbing the towering mountains, Tarzan dangled from the vertical rock face.  Reaching onwards, he gripped onto a rock that looked like it was bound to fall. Luckily it was sturdy. He was so scared. With an apprehensive feeling, he was determined to climb to the top of the steep cliff.

Reaching the top , Tarzan saw the Dojo. At that moment he had so many emotions running through his head. But what he was feeling the most was tiredness, anxiousness and relief.

Walking towards the humongous door, he knocked and waited to see who would answer. He heard a clanking of chains coming from the hefty door. “Huh? What’s that noise?” he wonders apprehensively. Glancing up he sees a Sensei and in respect he bows. The sensei gives a penetrating stare and points to the right.

“What?”, Tarzan gives in expression of his face. He thinks that he climbed up the mountain, risks his life, and goes to the dojo to gets rejected. So in reaction he drooped his body in rejection of the sensei and slumps off slowly.

Then, to show the sensei he is worthy he meditates all night and day. Deep in meditation, Tarzan doesn’t even realize that the door opened. But then he opens an eye and stands up. Again the Sensei points to the right.  So he then again turns away in disappointment.

Then something struck Tarzan. He scrunches his face and turns around to prove to the sensei. He ran up and “BAM” the door was knocked out. One kick and it was gone. Ready to show he was worthy, the sensei came out and pointed to the right hand side again, for the third time.

This time tarzan looked and there was a sign that said, “USE THE SIDE ENTRANCE”. In embarrassment he turned and walked to the side entrance. So all this time when he thought he was getting rejected, he was actually getting told to use the side entrance.

The 'THING' In the Hut

It was a dark, cold gloomy night. I stumbled upon a hut in the forest in the heart of the forest. I was about to enter the hut when suddenly I feel a slimy substance oozing out of the door.

Reaching out towards the door, I see a bloody finger peeking through a teeny weeny hole. My Nerves started to grow like a well fed plant, and that was when I realized the oozing substance was blood. Out of the blues I hear someone say, "Do you have a plaster I can borrow?".

"oh my gosh", I say to my self. "Who was that", I call in self defence, With my ultra strong legs I kicked the door down. And there right in front of my eyes was something I had never seen in my entire life. It was a cat-dog-fish-lion-parrot-human looking thing.

It look so scared I wanted to pick it up but it might have been mutated. Instead I gave the 'THING' a plaster. Then all of a sudden I hear a UFO sound from above. "Yes my precious", it says in a smeegle voice.(Smeegle from the lord of the rings). "Abduct her, abduct her for crushing my house", 'THING' screams. "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgggggghhh", running for my life, it was shooting me with fireballs. I ran, Iran away from him. I ran as fast as I could, but the flames caught me and I got Brochitis. Ain't nobody got time for that. It was that day I almost got abducted by aliens.

Bread With Mrs King

Nothings better than bread straight out of the oven. Today we had the opportunity of tasting school made bread hot and fresh from the oven. Momma King came in and gave us the instructions to make the bread.

It was really fun making the mix but the boring bit was waiting for the yeast to rise. Luckily for me and Ana, (my partner), we sped up the time and put our mix in front of the heater. (Cheaters much) and then we added the rest of the mix and got dirty.... in flour. Well, only because we started kneading the bread.

Other than waiting for our breads to bake, kneading would've had to be the 1 thing that made me most tired. On behalf of me and Ana I would like to thank Mama King for coming into school today and teaching us how to make bread. Thank You Very MUUUUCCCHHHH.. :)

The Heart Attack Grill Argument

I drew this picture with my left hand. (Was quite hard)

Room15 strongly believes that the heart attack grill should not operate in Glen Innes. If The Heart Attack Grill sold in GI, the obesity problem would increase in GI.

Super morbidly obese people will eat at The Heart Attack Grill  and will eventually become sick and die probably of pneumonia. When Jon Basso sells his food he says, "It will kill you", and then gives it to you. So he practically kills people slowly. The spokes model for The Heart Attack Grill dies from pneumonia at a young age. He could have survived if he hadn't have eaten all that fatty food.

What makes it worse, is that people over 150kilos get to eat for free. They can get whatever they want whenever they want. Single, double, triple and quadruple bypass are the names of their burgers and no doubt that these burgers will mean people have to have more of these surgeries.

The food at The Heart Attack Grill is unacceptable to be even sold in the USA, let alone in beautiful NZ. The lard used to cook the unlimited fries is animal fat and is more unhealthy than vegetable fats.

If bringing the Heart Attack Grill to Auckland meant more jobs for the community and more money - does this give enough of a reason to make this a positive idea?

I believe that even though there will be more jobs available, I don't think that the Heart Attack Grill should sell in GI - if only for one reason - FAT!

That Power

WILL.I.AMs latest hit (That Power) is one inspirational song. When I was reading the lyrics, I didn't realize that the song was about trying your best to achieve in life with not the best surroundings.

For instance: Will.i.am didn't grow up in one of the richest suburbs in the world. He lived in the projects which are government owned houses. (Just like my suburb Glen Innes). But here he is now as a world known pop artist. From poorly supported environments you can still go places in your life if you keep on trying. Just like WILL.I.AM.

'That power', the title of his latest song, I believe describes that power you can have to make the world a much better place. "If you want to invent the next iPhone do it nobodies gonna stop you!", he quoted. (Or something like that)

He donated an amazing amount of money to the Manaiakalani Cluster. I couldn't even believe it my self. 100,00 DOOOOLLLLLLAAAAARRRRRSSSS!!! Seeing him was one thing but performing for him was another. When our school found out that he was coming, most of us didn't believe that. he was coming to GI or even Pt.England School? I found it quite weird he would come to my school instead of a rich school. But then I heard his life story and figured out why he came. He grew up in a place just like Glen Innes. But in east California. He told us that if you have a dream you would like to pursue don't let anybody stop you from reaching your dream. I would like to thank the man him self WILL.I.AM for donating this enormous amount of money.

Anyway performing infront of Will.i.am put this enormous amount of weight on my shoulders. !st of all was because I was a little star struck, and second of all was because he probably never seen a kapa haka performance ever. So I had to do it with kaha and mana. Which was had because I was soo sooo sooo sooo hungry. And a little bit nervous. You know how it is.

It sucks that I didn't get to meet him in person but if I did the first thing I would say would probably be, "Kia ora, ko Tyla taku ingoa. Ko wai to ingoa. Kei hea to koutou o Black eyed Peas" really really fast or, "Hi".

Kapa Haka on Fiafia Night For Me Was Sooo.....

With our school senior kapa haka group first to perform, the beginning of our 2013 School Fiafia night was about to start. All my nerves were crashing in my stomach like rough waves colliding against humongous old rocks.
Awaiting on the side of the stage, I turn my head towards the crowd and at that moment I wanted to run away. Imagine yourself standing all confident and then you look out to about 2-4000 people. Now how would you feel? well I felt like the worlds smallest thing compared to that humongous crowd.

"Now can we all give a big hand to the senior kapahaka group. Take it away guys"(or something like that), the host Mr Burt announced. Striding on to the stage, all my nerves and butterflies slowly escaped my stomach. Its like the moment went from agony to ecstasy. The first chords of the guitars strums just click me into kapaz mode. All our practises built up to this one performance.

I was singing my little heart away and then all you know is our first waiata is almost finished. "O te motu, tena ra koutou nga iwi o te motu hei ha!", we finish our first song with. "Hope(translation: ho pe", I call as the kaea, (Leader).

" A tenea wheua!", the other kaeas call starting off the girls haka. While they're saying that I'm saying to myself in my head, "HAKA HARD, HAKA HARD!!!" At the start of the haka I forgot most of my action but who cares about actions so I said to my self, "Kia care". All I wanted to do was go hard and... HAKA HARD!!, which I did. Mostly because hakas mainly about the kupu. "KIA U TONU NGA TIKANGA TUKU IHO, AUE HI HA HI!!!" I bellow giving it my all.

It was then all the actions came to me. "Arai hia ra nga tama tane kia puru, kia puru ai I aha ha!" "I'll put a pukana here and a pukana there", I say in my head as bellowing the haka. As the wahine haka finished it felt my breath was taken away from me after screaming and yelling the haka with all my strength and heart. Luckily us girls got a brake while the boys did their haka.

"Tahi rua toru", I count in my head. "HI!" , and the boys finished their haka off strongly and with kaha. (As usual). It was time for our entry song for the junior kapa. While we finished the first first bit of the song we start the second bit and the cute little ones walk on stage singing along. While the young bucks did their thing we stayed on stage to give them company.

"Tahi rua toru wha PUKANA!!!",  We all ended with. What a performance. That is one I'll never forget. Man Whatta Night it was.

The Alive Heart Photo

Once upon a time there was an urban myth about a photo that live a life like any other human being. Everyday the photo would somehow get itself around the house, but when the family were home the photo was on the windowsill. But one day when the family were home, the saw the photo move and were scared. Because of that the family moved away because they thought the house was haunted. The mysterious photo followed them wherever they went, like a stalker. Because of that the family locked the doors as the photo cried. Until Finally they haven't seen the photo ever since. Ever since they haven’t seen the photo. They were afraid. The moral of the story is ohana means family and family means never leave anyone behind. The photo was so sad when the family left. Thats the moral.

This was based on Harry Potter how the photos can talk...

My Sponge bob Story

Looking at the waves, Sponge-Bob and Patrick were going for their everyday 11 am surf at Wharepaku Beach. As the waves barrel, Sponge-Bob surfs through them. Surfing his little heart out,  "Wooaahhoaaah!!!!!!", Sponge-Bob screams while he dies beneath the waves (Not literally).

Watching Sponge-Bob, Patrick chuckles with a smirk on his face. "Apply the sauce (glue)", Patrick says in a dumb voice. Why glue? well he thinks he can solve the problem of falling off his board.

Tackling the waves,Patrick acts like the man. "I will not be separated", he demands. Nek minnit. Seeing a rock, he screams aloud,"SEPARATE, SEPARATE!!". Crashing into the rock, the waves separate Patrick from his board and skeleton.

His skeleton flies out of his skin like a canon ball being shot in the air. Landing on the beach skeleton goes in the sand head first. Washing up ashore was the skin with two bits of board on the feet. "Nice sandals", the skeleton compliments to the skin. "Thank-you we're inseparable", skin replies.

Marlin and Dory: Just Keep Swimming

Sighing with grief, Marlin sits upon the rock. "Hey Mr Grumpy Gills, when life gets you down you know what you gotta do? Dory whooped. "No I don't know what you gotta do" Marlin demands, as he glares at Dory with disappointment. Pulling Marlin off the rock Dory sings, "Just keep swimming Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming, what do we do we swim, swim, swim." "Dory stop singing you're gonna get the song stuck in my head. Oh too late! " he exclaims as Dory hauls him down into the deep ocean. "Sorry" Dory replies.

What I Love!!!

Every practice we get more confident and stronger. Kapa haka is one of my favourite things to do at school. On Mondays with Whaea Sophie and Whaea Raewyn and on Fridays with Miss Tito. I started loving it when I was 10.

My mum found out about a kapa haka group that started at our marae,(Tumutumuwhenua), in Orakei. When I found out, I wanted to go. But not alone, so I pulled my friend Kaycee into it. Ending up at kapa haka every Wednesday afternoon, I would get our waiata, (songs), stuck in my head for the rest of the night. It was annoying but it all paid off. why? Well because after weeks of practice we went down to Ngarawahia for Koroneihana.

Koroneihana is a celebration for the Maori King. By the way Koroneihana means Coronation. After performing in front of everybody down there and watching other groups, my confidence in kapa haka gained a lot. And I mean A LOT!! It went from performing with my cousins from Orakei to being a Kaea at the age of 11 for our prize giving opening.

Ever since prize giving  I've all ways wanted to be in kapa haka and plus my Te reo Maori has gained a lot to. I'm picking in Maori language a lot. When I grow up I would like to be a Kaea of an international Kapa Haka group. This is where my passion and love goes to.

Two Minor Shakes: Will there be More???

This is a little project Mrs Tele'a gave the extension class. It was to see if we could self manage it.

Sunday the 17th of March, a minor earthquake, (or two), hit parts of Auckland. It was all over the net in minutes. When it hit us at home, my mum ran straight under the doorways for cover. luckily it was only for about 3 seconds. Now our family is prepared properly for another.

The earthquake was created by Rangitoto and Motutapu rubbing together. The magnitude was 3.1 for the first one and the second one was 3.9. This is no joke. First Christchurch now us. Better be ready.

2).Bright and early, with my ridiculous outfit on, Jay pushes me off to sea.

3). On top of the surfboard, I shiver with horror.

4). Miraculously, I glided along the cool blue waves.

5). Without knowing, a wave crashes on top of me.

6). Floating on the water, I shake my fake mane of a lion.

7). Flinging the water from my wet suit, I paddle back to shore.

Einstein Poem

Here is a poem that Kaycee, Gloria and I made. We had to make something creative and to explain what Einstein once said. I guess you can say, we made his his quotes easier to understand. Hope you like your poem.

How weird are us humans
For we don’t know the reason of life
Although I think I have a hunch
We might just be a bunch
of people here to please each other
Making us feel happy just like daughter and mother
For life is not long
We shall live it not right nor wrong
The things you do, affect me inside
Not to mention also the outside
Although they are unknown
Destiny binds us together for we have grown
by the ties of sympathy.
The ideals that have lighted my way
“And time after time given me new courage” I say
To face life cheerfully and focus on the good things
Like Kindness, beauty and truth
Which can value more than a million rings.
BY TYLA-MARIE, KAYCEE AND GLORIA
Here is Einstein's original quote:

How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people -- first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving...

The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth.
